Happy Tacos – Free for All Challenge #662

I never got a chance to upload my card from Friday!  This is a combination of both of Friday’s challenges.  The MIX Challenge was to use cardboard and the Free for All Challenge was Clean & Simple Foods.   OK, so the CAS element got away from me. Go ahead and judge me.  I based the card on a funny meme that I saw that said this:

The sentiment uses my very own font that I created on calligraphr.com.  If you’d like to use this on your cards just right click on the image above and save it to your computer.  If you use it, I’d love to see it, so please tag me @cardsbyjennifrann and #thestampingactuary.

I used this cute SSS dog and taco that Jacqueline had sent me, since she knows I love cute critters (especially in hats or clothes!). I added a bit of cardboard for the MIX challenge and called it done!

Octopi – Free For All Challenge #650

Today’s Free for All Challenge is funny animals! Yes please! I had this dad joke just waiting for a card.

HA! I love it! I’ve also combined this with the loose watercolor MIX challenge. I stamped the 3 octopi (?) and loosely watercolored them. Then I dug out this fun gelli print out of my background drawer and printed out the first part of the joke for the outside. It was a quick and easy card to make before we left for the beach this morning.

Thinking of Birds – MIX Challenge 473

We’re all about birds this week on SCS. Yesterday’s Ways to Use It Challenge was birds, but I couldn’t fit a bird onto yesterday’s card, but that’s OK because we’re challenged to use birds again in today’s MIX Challenge! We’re also challenged to use background stamps in today’s Free for All Challenge. This Geometric Swirl background is probably my favorite background stamp. I used it on a gelli plate to make a mixed media background. First, I printed the digi and die cut the stitched postage stamp die. Then I masked the image and applied washi tape around the edges to keep them white. I knew I was going to want two cards, so I had to cut two masks. That was the hardest part of making this card. I applied Speckled Egg DOX ink to the gelli plate and just took a plain print of that. Then I applied glitter acrylic paint and set the stamp into the paint. I stamped one card with the painted stamp (not pictured) and pulled a print of the negative with this one.

I love the look of that glittery acrylic paint.  After I removed the masks, I colored with SN and Copic Markers. I reached for another background stamp (French Script) to add some interest to my card base. A coworker’s father-in-law just passed, so I needed a sympathy card. I really like the way this came out. I hope it brings comfort to her and her family.  A little bit of Stickles on the flowers added just the right amount of sparkle to the image.  The photos don’t do it justice!

Dino Classmate – MIX Challenge #466

It’s Friday and today’s MIX Challenge was hosted by Lydia who gave us a very fun background technique to try.  I rarely think to use my gelli plate but I’m always excited when a challenge calls for it,   I thought my background had a prehistoric quality that would be cool for this Tea Rex. I had a store bought card with this joke that made me laugh so hard, I had to use it.  And I think the fact that he is standing there sipping tea really adds to the fun.

You can find the whole saying below if you want to save it for yourself:

Polar Bear Polar Bear – MIX Challenge #461

For today’s MIX Challenge, Polly has challenged us to make cards inspired by Eric Carle. My card is based on “Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?”

My kids have that one and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear.” I’ve never read the caterpillar one. Honestly, I chose this book because I was so excited to use my MFT Polar Bear Pals stamps.  They’ve been on my wish list for years, and I finally got them.  For some extra inspiration I checked out the MFT sketch challenge:

and this week’s MFT color challenge:

I was especially excited to actually have the Prestige cardstock in each of these colors.  I chose Eiffel Tower as my card base.  The other colors were approximated using Distress Ink and Copic Markers.  Three fun challenges to combine into one fun Christmas card.

Linda’s Cup of Tea – Teapot Tuesday #667

It’s Teapot Tuesday and today’s Tea Party is for Linda (Hotwheels). We’re sending some kind words and encouragement as we mark the second anniversary of her dear mother’s passing. Polly is our hostess and she has challenged us to make our cards with something that reminds us of our own mother. When I read that Linda and her mother liked tea, I knew I had to make a tea party card. I get my tea drinking habit from my mom. When I was growing up, she always had a cup of tea on the table while she sewed, and now so do I. Well, except I’m making cards instead of sewing. I wish I had picked up the sewing skills too.

This ended up being a combination of last week’s MIX Challenge to paper piece with mixed media backgrounds, because I was looking at these sweet Bo Bunny teacups and thinking they would look good paper-pieced. I had small strips of paper that I had used to soak up the watercolor from yesterday’s Technique Lovers Challenge.

I love the Fabriano Hot Press paper.  The pad that I have right now is 11 x 14.  I’m able to cut six card fronts out of each piece, and I’m left with two strips of 5.5 x 1.25.  I always soak up the remaining ink of my workspace with a scrap of paper and yesterday I decided that I should use those strips.  Lo and behold, those strips that I used to soak up the bird color made beautiful teacups.  To make it a truly mixed media card, I added gold Wink of Stella to the rims of the teacups, colored the flowers with metallic markers and added Stickles to the petals and flower centers.  Love that sparkle.

I’m also linking to this week’s Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge which is looking for Feminine cards.
